Advanced Distribution Management Systems are one of the first mature successful products from the information age. Over a 30-year period, a series of computer applications, all related to the real-time control of electricity distribution networks, were developed to meet the challenges of privatisation, deregulation and CO₂ reduction. These have evolved into ADMS, which now plays a major role in adapting traditional electricity distribution networks to meet the challenges presented by the transition to renewable generation and reducing our carbon footprint. It complements the skills training and aviation medicine training currently undertaken by aircrew to allow them to perform at their best in the high-stress, data-rich environments of modern aircraft.
‘Airmanship’ is a much-overused word in the aviation world: Part 1 of this book will allow the reader to have a much clearer idea of what it is, together with concrete and practical ways to improve ‘cognitive airmanship’. Each chapter includes sections to aid in the assessment and instruction of these skills.
Part 2 of the book covers Aircrew Performance Coaching, detailing how executive coaching techniques can be combined with sports psychology to provide a unique and proven system applicable to aircrew.

History of the Mersey Tunnels

This book follows the history of how the Mersey Tunnels came about, details of their construction and, unlike any tunnel projects before, how the first tunnel (Queensway) was excavated by hand, as no tunnel of comparable diameter had been built before. Nothing existed to match its length or its complexity, so it was known at the time as the 8th Wonder of the World. The Queensway has provided shelter in times of war and both tunnels are an integral part of the success of the region, and will remain so for many years to come.

In the memoir he highlights some of those projects with descriptions of the design processes and the construction methods used to bring the works to successful completion, keeping technical detail to the minimum needed for the reader’s understanding of the projects. Personal reminiscences of his travels complement descriptions of life as an engineer.

Developments in analysis of structures during the author’s working life have enabled all manner of structures to be designed to display elegance of form in a natural way without unnecessary embellishment. Practising engineers understand the satisfaction to be found in designing such engineering works and seeing them built as they envisaged. It is hoped the author’s enthusiasm for his work as expressed in the memoir may inspire others to become the civil engineers of the future.

London Heathrow Airport June 2021

125 years ago no one thought there would ever be such things as airports. An aerodrome was then built on a small part of the site during 1914 to 1918 which became derelict after 1918. Then it was opened as a private aerodrome in 1929, and then expanded to it present size but only for military purposes during the World War. It became London's passenger airport after the war. It was just a set of tents along the A4 in 1946, which gradually expanded to its present layout over the past seventy years, on very much a piece meal basis, with each development thought to be the "state of the art". Various projects relating to the airport have been seriously considered but aborted. No one can say for certain how the airport will develop in the future.

The Motoring Adventures of a Baby Boomer

The author’s grandfathers were both employed by the pre-war motor industry. His singer father, John Hanson, would test John’s knowledge of car makes on the long journeys between theatres. He has seen UK car numbers increase tenfold in his lifetime and this is a personal account of his love of classic cars before their success leads to their demise.

The motor car took him around Australia; ending up in Darwin 12 months after cyclone Tracy. He explored the wilderness, whilst as a lawyer he represented the Crocodile Dundees of the Northern Territory.

He has bought over 70 cars, enjoying their beauty, the aural pleasure of the exhaust note and addictive pleasures of oil and petrol.
